Our ministry started working full time in the Barra Lampara village, along Rio Dulce, Izabel in 2021. This village is a 6-hour drive away from our home, followed by a 45-minute boat ride to get to the village, as there is no road access to this area. Many have asked why we have decided to work so far from our home. There are two reasons for this: we felt God telling us to and no one else is helping this area with healthcare access.
Barra Lampara is a village of around 170 families, consisting of approximately 800 people. There are an additional 12 surrounding villages that are being helped by our ministry. The main source of income for all these families is fishing or making fishing nets. Many of these fishermen are catching fish out of a rowboat or canoe. Almost all of the people in these villages are living paycheck to paycheck and are just getting by. The closest place for any access to healthcare is a 45-minute motorboat ride away, making it very difficult for them to receive any healthcare but especially in an emergency.
Currently, we are renting a building as our “homebase” in Barra Lampara. This is where we work and sleep while up “in Rio”. Some of the medical clinics are held at our house on the river, as are the outreach programs that our team members are running. For some of the more remote villages, we take our boat and all our supplies for the day and set-up at a local abandoned clinic and hold our clinic day there. Once the clinic is finished for the day, we pack everything back up and take our boat back home.
Our long-term goal for the Barra Lampara area is to buy land and build a permanent clinic where we can provide free consistent healthcare for these communities. This will allow the people to have close follow-up for chronic medical conditions and access to some emergency care when needed. Hopefully we will also be able to do well child exams on every child from birth to help prevent long lasting disability and/or death. Once a permanent clinic is established and running well, we eventually hope to have a couple beds available for patients who require a short “overnight hospital” stay. These beds would be used for patients with dehydration, those needing nebulizer treatments, or needing a few doses of IV antibiotics, etc.
Our medical clinic is run strictly off of donations. All of the medical care that we provide is funded through donations from people like you!
